A very narrow and deep canyon formed by the erosive forces of the Gunnison River on some of the most ancient rocks formations in the world. Though dams upstream have slowed the forces of the Gunnison the inner canyon it still is impassable in many sections. The river drops over 95 feet per mile on average (18 meters per kilometer).
